The stock market is a discounting mechanism -- it displays the results of investor anticipation for what the future holds. When it's up, people anticipate rising stock prices and probably an expanding economy, although the market doesn't necessarily correlate with the economy.

You don't have to be a liberal, however, to recognize that the housing market is in the dumps, and housing usually leads the economy; the credit markets are crunching (as a result of subprime defaults and other factors); we are in fact a debtor nation; oil prices are shooting up -- all those are negatives for the broader economy. Can the market, led by the global economy, shrug all these factors off and keep going? Maybe so. We'll have to wait and see.

If you are an investor you probably don't think the economy is doing badly! Especially when the stocks drop the way they have been dropping.
