Why isn't the NYSE normally listed with other major indexes? Usually I only...

...see the Dow, NASDAQ and S&P.? I'd appreciate any explanations you can give me.

It's what people are used to looking at. You don't get much more incremental information in knowing what the NYSE composite did vs the S&P, so people look at the S&P. Nasdaq is baramator for tech, and the dow is limited to the bigger firms.

type "nya" in google finance if you want to know the value of the NYSE index.

the dow industrial 40 stocks are part of the NYSE listings

The NYSE is the New York Stock Exchange. It's not an index, and there is no index calculated on all the stocks traded on the exchange, as there is with those traded on NASDAQ.
