Times do change, but when I had absolutely no credit I got my 1st and 2nd credit cards from Capital One. I would suggest only getting 1 credit card and paying the balance off at the end of the month and don't use it unless you have the cash to pay it off at the end of the month.
After a while they may raise your credit limit if you're doing a good job with your payments, but be careful not to go nuts with that. Only spend what you can pay off and work to build you credit history, not your debts. Your credit can get bad very quickly if you over spend and can't afford to pay off your card. Having good credit is a very, very good thing these days. http://www.myfico.com/creditEducation/
