Setting up a savings account?

hi, i just graduated high school and i'm about to start college soon, i got about 1k cash from family and friends as a congratulations. Now i've been thinking that i should start saving it into something. I was just wondering if creating a savings account at a bank was difficult or not? Does it matter what bank i set it up at? and is that how debit cards work and such?
