My stepson joined about 10 weeks ago - initially there were quite a few things he needed to pay for and some stuff that he needed that was not issued as they are effectively personal effects - e.g. extra toiletries for packing for exercises, His base (AFC Harrogate) has a cashpoint on site so getting cash wasn't a problem though he was paid in cash for the first month to make things easier.
Like any other job you will be issued with everything you need to do the job - uniform boots kit etc but not everything you need to live eg iron, ironing board toiletries etc.

Beer isn't free, guy. If your regiment is full of the Geordies, Stokies and Scotties I normally drink with you better buy a round or 5 in the Canteen.
Seriously, good luck Mate You'll need a bank account but don't take a lot of cash, just a worry to look after. Do what the NCOs says and pretend to enjoy it and and you'll be fine.

About 40 quid. any more and you'll temp some weasel to nick it when your not looking. You get cash paid whilst in training and issued the initial basic equipment, so all you need to buy is soap. Stay away from the Beer and lay off the Gingsters Pies and you will do OK. Good luck it's definately worth it!
