It's partly due to a lucrative arms market that garners huge profits for the government and private contractors loosely associated with them. Also, with its growing economy, Malaysia is looking to become a major influence at least in regards to Southeast Asian affairs, if not on a global scale.

There's also a push for a free trade pact with the United States that has been delayed as of late.

Politicians profit from wars due to sales in arms and it is the reason why they are interested to meddle tin other countries.
