How long can someone leave their belongings on your property before you...
...can claim, dump, or sell them? We allowed a friend, who was going through a divorce, to stay in a trailer on our property. We asked him to get a propane tank for heating and cooking due to space heaters causing our power bill to raise. He told us that he wouldn't need one. Once it got cold he poceeded to use three different space heaters, our power bill doubled. Due to his financial situation at the time we did not ask for any help in paying the bill, KARMA. He asked to stay for only two weeks and was there for 7 months. He left three months ago and has still not picked up all of his belongings. We have asked him repeatedly to pick them up and he ignores us. Please help with any advice you might have.

Usually 30 days, but it varies from state to state. It's best to put a certified letter in the mail, informing them that you will be discarding their things 30 days after the receipt of the letter. You may want to check with your local legal aid hot-line and ask them if you don't get the answers you need here.
